CONCEPTUALIZING ART & RESEARCH | Heal Through Time Journal

I found myself lost in deep thoughts,

figuring out the different things I wanted to portray in this project.

On my trip back to Chicago, where I was born and grew up in, my family friend took my family and I to Art On The Mart. Everyone knew I was into art, I’m a fashion major, etc., but to my surprise, there was one video that got me hooked. The body movement, simplicity in colors and shots, words floating along the edge and the foreground of each scene. It was about water, about sustainability, but not only did the message touch my heart, I went livid with the way the video portrayed and depicted the message through voice over poetry, sound, movement and color, blue & white. It was so simple, a very simple concept, but so extraordinary in my eyes. Floe by Carrie Hanson and The Seldoms

Enraptured by such profound and beautiful imagery on a building, I decided to use this as the main source of video inspiration for my piece.

I knew each component, but how to go about it?

In class, we were assigned to do our own explorations, but little did I know that those explorations not only raptured my brain into something entirely different, it was hard to go around. I did some smocking pieces, some laser cut outs of shapes. It just didn’t enunciate the things I wanted.

As I reflected to my past and became lost in thought, through the drawings and other past photographs found on my phone, I started to relate each image to the project and to the way I wanted to display such concept.

With these images, I was able to not only maneuver past my anxiety of having to show my process, but also detail in imagery the different aspects of my past emotions and thoughts and their importance.
